For a growing compact homelab, our first choice is the DeskPi RackMate T1 Plus DP-0080, a 10-inch, 8U frame with 260 mm depth, provided your equipment fits its shelves. Choose the RackMate T0 DP-0047 for a smaller 4U stack, or the StarTech RK8OD for shallow equipment with a native 19-inch mounting face. Measure bodies, connected plugs and shelf space before ordering.

DeskPi dimensions are width × depth × height. StarTech's horizontal labels differ, so retain its stated ordering when marking out the footprint. These are open frames, including the DeskPi models sold as “cabinets”; choose an enclosed model separately if you need a lockable enclosure.
Best 10-inch rack for expansion: DeskPi RackMate T1 Plus
The T1 Plus specification gives you 8U and a 260 mm frame depth. We prefer it when the worksheet leaves little expansion space in the T0. Its 212 mm internal width is the first filter for a desktop device; the nominal 10-inch label is not a promise of that much clear shelf space.
Buy the Plus accessories deliberately. The matching DP-0053 shelf measures 250 × 260 × 43 mm and lists T1 Plus compatibility. Budget for the shelves your layout needs, then confirm the exact bundle's contents before subtracting any included trays.
Variant trap: the original T1 DP-0022 lists a 200 mm outside depth, while T1 Plus DP-0080 lists 260 mm. The DP-0053 compatibility notice explicitly excludes the original T1. Match the full model name, not just “8U RackMate.” The official store distinguishes silver DP-0080 from black DP-0080-Black.
Best small desktop rack: DeskPi RackMate T0
The T0 wiki specifies 4U, 200 mm internal depth, a 1U tray, a 1U blank panel and mounting hardware. It is our compact choice when your completed layout fits without sacrificing cable access or ventilation. An included tray is useful, but does not establish fit for your particular switch or computer.
The maker's dimensions conflict. That wiki's header gives 281 × 200 × 274 mm, while its specification table gives 280 × 200 × 274 mm. It also lists 222 mm internal width, whereas the compatible DP-0031 shelf lists 212 mm. For shelf-mounted equipment, plan around the shelf's documented clear width and ask DeskPi about any borderline fit.
T0 Plus is a different depth: DP-0072 keeps the 4U format but lists 260 mm depth and uses the deeper DP-0053 shelf family. Do not order that shelf for the original T0: its compatibility notice excludes T0. The current T0 store page identifies the black version as DP-0047-Black.
Best for shallow 19-inch equipment: StarTech RK8OD
The RK8OD datasheet describes an 8U, two-post steel desktop frame with square holes and a 29.0 cm maximum mounting depth. Choose it for matching front-mounted networking equipment or a suitable cantilever shelf. A server requiring rear rails needs a different support arrangement.
It includes 20 M5 screws and 20 M5 cage nuts. The datasheet says it is not wallmountable, so treat it as a desktop purchase. StarTech's product data still marks RK8OD active; do not substitute specifications from a similarly named model.
Check the exact RK8OD at StarTech.
Size the equipment before choosing the frame
10-inch versus 19-inch is a mounting-format decision. Match native rack ears and panels to the frame. For desktop equipment, match the actual shelf surface and device body instead. A rack's outside width and a shelf's clear internal width answer different questions.
U measures vertical mounting space. StarTech's sizing guidance defines 1U as 1.75 inches / 44.45 mm and says equipment can occupy more than 1U. A 1U shelf does not make a computer standing on it a 1U device. Draw the occupied height through to the next shelf, including the device's specified ventilation clearance.
Match the mounting format
Check the equipment's rack ears or choose an explicitly compatible desktop shelf.
Measure the connected device
Include feet, power plugs, network plugs and the route cables need to turn.
Draw the vertical layout
Reserve the shelf, the device above it, ventilation and future additions.
Confirm support and access
Check rack and shelf limits, mounting type, outlet access and the space behind the frame.
Print this dimension worksheet
Fill it out from each device's manual and your own measurements. Blank entries mean fit is still unconfirmed. Use our home server guide for equipment selection and multi-gig switch guide for ports before finalizing the rack order.

Location: available width ____; depth ____; height ____; service space behind ____; nearest outlets ____.
Our conservative planning rule is connected depth = body depth + front plug projection + rear plug projection + space for cable turns. Compare that envelope with the rack, shelf and available location; use the device's mounting-plane measurement where its manual requires one. An open rear still needs free space behind it. StarTech specifically distinguishes front-only shelves from shelves requiring rear posts and calls for clearance behind front-mounted equipment.
The QSW-2104-2T-R2 is a fanless desktop switch, making it a useful worksheet entry rather than an assumed rack fit. Record its actual dimensions and power connection before choosing a shelf.

The DP-0060 wiki names T0 compatibility; the T1 Plus store also lists the blank keystone panel among installable accessories. Oversized keystone modules may not fit. Order the panel and connections deliberately rather than assuming “blank” means populated.
The screw store explicitly includes T1-Plus in its compatibility description. For RK8OD, keep screw-and-nut pairs matched: the rack supplies M5, while CABSHELF1U supplies M6. Neither is the RackMate screw specification. The shelf's 15 kg rating is a shelf limit, not an authorization to load the whole assembly to that weight in any arrangement.
Access, cooling and power
Reserve room for power bricks and cable access alongside the equipment. Follow each device's ventilation instructions. T1 Plus documents mounting support for two 120 mm fans or four 80 mm fans; this is a mounting option, not a cooling-performance promise. Choose power distribution only after checking outlet region, device requirements and where the adapters will sit.
The RK8OD manual directs owners to place heavier equipment lower and to unload the frame before moving it. Follow the exact assembly manual; this guide does not establish structural or load performance. If your UPS or server requires a deeper four-post rack, choose that before buying these accessories.
- Yes: Exact rack model and mounting format match the equipment
- Yes: Shelf surface and occupied height fit the completed worksheet
- Yes: Connected cable envelope fits the location with service access
- Yes: Included hardware and separately ordered fasteners have been reconciled
- Partly: Rack and shelf load documentation is sufficient for the planned equipment
- No: An unresolved dimension or load conflict remains: obtain clarification before ordering
How we choose
We compared official model pages, accessory compatibility tables, store variant identifiers, datasheets and manuals, checked November 2, 2026. Fit, matching shelf families, mounting hardware and access determine these picks. We did not assemble or load the racks. Conflicting maker figures remain visible, and unconfirmed clearances stay blank; the rack and shelf specifications cannot substitute for the equipment's own instructions.
Verdict
Choose T1 Plus DP-0080 when the deeper shelf family and expansion space suit your worksheet. Choose T0 DP-0047 for a compact layout that fits its shallower trays. Choose RK8OD for shallow 19-inch front-mounted equipment, with its load discrepancy resolved for your purchase. Finish the shelf and fastener inventory before ordering the frame.
Frequently asked questions
What fits in a 10-inch rack?
Start with the equipment body and its shelf, rather than the nominal rack width. DeskPi's DP-0031 and DP-0053 shelves both list 212 mm internal width, despite their wider mounting faces. Check device height, feet, plugs and ventilation too. A small desktop switch or mini PC is a candidate after those checks; the label NAS or homelab does not establish compatibility.
Can a 19-inch switch fit a 10-inch network rack?
A switch with a native 19-inch mounting face needs matching rack hardware; the narrower RackMate format is a different purchase. For a desktop switch without rack ears, compare its body with the shelf's internal width and depth instead. The switch's port count does not tell you which mounting format it uses, so check the exact device and its mounting instructions.
How tall is an 8U rack?
The U count describes mounting space: one rack unit is 1.75 inches, or 44.45 mm. Check overall height separately. DeskPi lists the T1 Plus at 418 mm high, or 451 mm with handles; StarTech lists the RK8OD at 41 cm high. Shelves, equipment standing above them and required ventilation gaps must all be allowed for in your layout.
Can I put a UPS or a server in these racks?
Only after confirming dimensions, weight and the device's required support. A full-width device that needs front and rear rails calls for a suitable four-post rack. The linked DeskPi rack tables provide no load rating, while StarTech's RK8OD datasheet and manual disagree on capacity. Do not infer a whole-rack limit from a shelf rating or buy a frame solely because a device is called a home server.
