What we collect
thisPING doesn't have accounts and doesn't collect your name, email address or payment details. When you click an outbound retailer link, we record which link was clicked, the page it was on and the time, together with the same anonymous daily visitor code described below. We never store your IP address with it.
Our web server keeps standard access logs, which include IP addresses, for security and troubleshooting. Log files are deleted automatically 14 days after they are rotated.
Visit statistics (no cookies)
To understand which guides help people, we count visits ourselves, without cookies and without third-party analytics. For each page view we record:
- the page, and the website that sent you there (for example a search engine)
- campaign tags in the link you followed, such as
utm_source=newsletter - device type, browser and operating system
- the region from your browser's language setting
- how long the page was on screen and how far down it was scrolled
- words you search for in our product finder
- an anonymous visitor code
The visitor code is a one-way hash of your IP address and browser details combined with a random value that changes every day and is deleted after two days. It lets us count unique visitors per day, but it can't identify you or link your visits across days. Your IP address is never stored with these statistics. If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track signal, we don't create the visitor code at all.
What's stored in your browser
- Theme (localStorage): your light or dark choice.
- Saved and recently viewed products (localStorage): kept in your browser. They reach our server only if you choose to compare your saved items, as part of that page's address.
- A closed picks bar (sessionStorage): if you close the floating picks bar on a guide, it stays closed until you close the tab.
Clear your browser's site data for thisping.com to remove all of it. thisPING doesn't use tailoring cookies or fingerprinting.
Retailers
When you follow a link to Amazon or another retailer, that retailer may set its own cookies to attribute a purchase to us. Those are governed by the retailer's privacy policy, such as Amazon's Privacy Notice. Visitors in the UK and Canada may be sent to Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.ca, where those stores' own privacy notices apply.
Your rights
Because we don't hold personal data tied to you, there is usually nothing to access or delete. If you have a question or request under the GDPR, the UK GDPR, the CCPA or Canada's PIPEDA, email info@thisping.com.
Children
thisPING is a general-audience site for buying home networking gear. It isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from them.
Changes
If we add analytics or other services, we'll update this page before they go live, and change the date at the top.
