Start with the Synology DS223j for a cheap NAS focused on shared files and versioned folder backups, provided its complete basket fits your spending cap. Compare the ASUSTOR Drivestor 2 Lite AS1102TL with exactly the same disks and separate backup drive if scheduled USB file copies suit your needs. Buy neither enclosure until the whole delivered order fits: the ceiling here is five hundred US dollars, including drives and independent backup storage.
Official specifications and compatibility checked November 3, 2026. Recommendations are conditional on checkout cost; no complete basket has a verified current under-cap total.

Size the files, mirror and backup separately
Use up to 1TB of live files as this guide's planning workload. Both appliance baskets specify two 2TB disks in RAID 1, giving 2TB nominal mirrored capacity before overhead, plus a 4TB external backup. That leaves nominal room for growth and backup history; it does not promise a retention period. Measure your own files before ordering.
ASUSTOR's capacity formula makes RAID 1 capacity the size of the smallest member drive. Synology notes that filesystem and system metadata reduce usable space further. If you need to store a full 2TB of live files immediately, reject these baskets and resize both primary and backup storage.
- 2TBNominal mirrored capacity before overhead

The WD Red Plus specifications identify the internal drive as CMR. The WD Elements datasheet identifies the Americas backup SKU and included power adapter. Buy the desktop version, rather than substituting a portable Elements drive with a similar name.
First choice for versioned folder backups: Synology DS223j
The DS223j has two drive bays, a Realtek RTD1619B processor, 1GB DDR4, one 1GbE Ethernet port and two USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports. DSM supports Btrfs and RAID 1. That is the hardware and software basis for our preference for ordinary file sharing and folder protection; it is not a measured performance result.
Its useful distinction is the recovery workflow. Hyper Backup supports external destinations, scheduling, multiple versions and integrity checks. Hyper Backup Explorer can browse backups on Windows, macOS, Ubuntu and Fedora. Select folder backup for this job; do not assume every full-system feature advertised on the general Hyper Backup page applies to this enclosure.
Synology's model-specific drive list lists WD20EFPX-68C4TN0, firmware 81.00A81. Check the suffix and firmware, not just “WD Red.” Its compatibility note limits assurance to the listed firmware.
The package includes an Ethernet cable, power adapter and power cord. Confirm a US cord and that the offer is diskless before adding the shared shopping list. Synology lists a standard two-year hardware warranty; its support-status data currently lists full firmware and technical support, without a fixed future end date in this record.
Buy condition: choose this basket if the whole checkout fits and you want versioned folder recovery. Check the exact model with Synology.
Alternative for scheduled USB copies: ASUSTOR Drivestor 2 Lite
The exact model is AS1102TL. Its specifications list two bays, a Realtek RTD1619B processor, non-expandable 1GB DDR4, one gigabit Ethernet port, one USB 3.2 Gen 1 port and one USB 2.0 port. Use the faster USB port for backup. It supports RAID 1 and Btrfs; it is an alternative workflow, not a network-speed upgrade over the DS223j.
ASUSTOR's AS 11TL drive record lists WD20EFPX-68C4TN0, firmware 81.00A81, for ADM 4.2.5 or later. This makes the internal disk pair a matched comparison rather than an unspecified “NAS drive” allowance.
External Backup supports scheduled transfers from NAS to USB. Read the job options carefully: one-to-one folder backup synchronizes the destination, while “Keep extra files at the destination” preserves destination-only files. Incremental copying and keeping extra files do not establish a version history for overwritten files. Test the exact recovery behavior you need before choosing this route over Hyper Backup.
ASUSTOR lists the AS1102TL as generally available and supported, with a three-year warranty. Its security policy gives a minimum five-year security-support period from first supply on January 9, 2024, rather than from your purchase date. The package includes the adapter, cord and Ethernet cable.
Buy condition: choose it if its delivered basket fits and scheduled USB file copies meet your recovery needs. Check AS1102TL specifications and buying options.
Variants and exclusions that change the order
DS124: its specification lists a single bay and Basic storage. A single-disk basket changes drive-failure recovery, so do not treat it as equivalent to these mirrored baskets. See DS124 vs DS223j for that decision.
TerraMaster F2-212: we found official model background, but could not confirm a current US package and complete basket cost. It stays off this shortlist; an accessible model article does not establish a buyable kit. That is a sourcing limit, not a claim that it is discontinued.
Disks and bundles: the WD20EFPX record covers one drive, so order a pair. A prepopulated NAS offer must identify its actual disks before it can replace the diskless basket. Keep the backup drive as a separate line item even when an enclosure bundle includes internal drives.
When equipment already owned can save a purchase
Inventory it before assigning any saving. Record the computer's model, supported operating system, boot-drive arrangement, available drive connections, actual data-disk models and health, Ethernet port, and independent backup destination. To match these baskets, it needs the same mirrored data capacity and backup job; include every missing disk, cable, adapter or boot drive in the checkout.
OpenMediaVault, for example, documents web administration, software RAID, SMB sharing and a USB Backup plugin. That establishes software capabilities, not compatibility with an unidentified old PC. No actual owned configuration was supplied for this comparison, so we do not nominate a free build or assume unknown hardware qualifies. Use our DIY NAS hardware guide before committing equipment to this role.
Keep the complete checkout within the cap
Add enclosure + both internal disks + independent backup + missing accessories + shipping + checkout tax. Include any required initial software or service charge. Reject a basket that exceeds the ceiling; do not make it qualify by silently removing its backup or counting unowned equipment as free.
- Yes: Confirm the exact enclosure, drive models and US power package
- Yes: Count cables that the maker includes before buying duplicates
- Partly: Reuse equipment only after recording its actual configuration
- No: Reject a diskless-only total as a complete storage budget
Neither basket specifies cloud storage. Synology says C2 Storage for Hyper Backup requires a monthly or annual subscription; include the chosen initial term if you add it and record renewals separately. Recheck every component together when a promotion changes, including the seller's condition and return terms. An enclosure discount alone cannot establish the cost of the kit.
Prove recovery before moving originals
The WD backup's USB interface does not establish exact NAS-device certification. Treat mounting and recovery as acceptance checks: confirm the NAS recognizes it, select a supported filesystem, and copy off anything valuable before formatting. Synology lists external filesystems; ASUSTOR does too.
Keep the original files until the NAS copy and external backup have both been checked. Synology's security guidance recommends offline backups and verifying restoration. Our suggested acceptance sequence is:
Build and update
Follow the exact model's installation instructions and enable the chosen mirrored volume.
Back up a sample
Include documents and photos, then run the actual external backup job.
Restore elsewhere
Recover into another folder; open the restored files and check the previous version if versioning is part of your plan.
Disconnect and repeat
Safely eject the backup after completion, keep it offline between jobs and set a reminder to reconnect it for the next backup.
This is a local recovery plan. Synology's backup guidance says local backups do not protect against fire, natural disaster or theft of all equipment. Add an off-site copy for that risk; budget another destination if you cannot use one you already maintain.
How we choose
We compared official specifications, exact internal-drive compatibility records, backup documentation and published support policies. The workload and shopping-list quantities are editorial planning choices; capacity results follow the makers' RAID rules. These are research-based recommendations, with no physical testing or measured throughput claims. Current checkout totals and exact backup-device certification remain unconfirmed, so neither candidate is certified below the spending ceiling. For broader application choices, see best NAS for home.
Verdict
Check the DS223j complete basket first for versioned folder backups. Choose the AS1102TL basket if its checkout fits and scheduled USB file backups meet your recovery needs. If neither fits with both disks and the separate backup, wait or qualify equipment already owned; keep the backup in the budget and prove a restore before moving your originals.
Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest NAS setup worth buying?
Compare the complete checkout for the DS223j and AS1102TL baskets below, including both internal disks and independent backup storage. Neither basket has a confirmed current total here, so there is no verified cheapest winner. Reusing a suitable PC is another option, but inventory its actual hardware first and count every missing part. Reject any basket that exceeds your delivered spending cap.
Do two 2TB drives give me 4TB of NAS storage?
Not in the RAID 1 configuration recommended here. RAID 1 stores identical data on its member drives, so two 2TB drives provide 2TB of nominal mirrored capacity, with less available after filesystem and system overhead. Adding the drive labels together describes raw capacity. The independent USB backup is another copy of your files, not additional space in the NAS volume.
Can a mirrored NAS replace an external backup?
Keep the external backup. Mirroring provides drive redundancy, while a separate backup gives you another recovery destination. Synology recommends maintaining an offline backup and verifying that it can be restored. These baskets include local USB storage; they do not include an off-site service or guarantee a particular version history. Keep another copy elsewhere for protection against loss of equipment at home.
