Pick for UGOS backups and photos: UGREEN NASync DXP2800
The DXP2800 runs UGOS and supplies 8 GB DDR5 memory, expandable to 16 GB, alongside its Intel N100 processor and single 2.5GbE port. It is a diskless enclosure: HDDs and SSDs are bought separately. Its two M.2 NVMe slots can hold cache or a separate SSD pool; they do not add SATA bays to the mirrored disk pair.

Check package and model options
- 2.5 Gbps port
- 2 bays
UGREEN's Photos guide documents automatic mobile-photo backup and local library management. Photo Backup uploads the file available on the phone, so an optimized local copy may lack the original resolution. Confirm that originals reach the NAS and open correctly before clearing the phone.
For selected Windows or Mac folders, use Sync & Backup > Back up & Restore > Add > Backup this computer in the desktop client. UGREEN's backup guide says the computer must stay awake and the client must remain open. Deleted source files remain at the backup destination, but this workflow does not provide a Version List for earlier revisions of overwritten files. Plan independent versioned protection and test recovery. Choose the Synology route below if its documented PC-image recovery is the requirement.

Synology PC-backup option: Synology DiskStation DS225+
Consider the DS225+ when you need Synology software: its supported packages include Active Backup for Business. For a supported Windows PC, that provides image-based backup and entire-device restoration, beyond the folder backup offered by Synology Drive. Create a Btrfs destination volume: Active Backup's requirements require that filesystem for PC backups.
Memory is the purchase trap. The model specifications list 2 GB installed, 6 GB maximum, and require at least 4 GB for Photos object recognition. The listed D4NS01-4G module adds 4 GB, giving 6 GB total. Include that module if object-based photo albums are part of the gift; basic photo backup is a different requirement.
The 2.5GbE port is useful to consider alongside your computer's adapter and switch ports. Inventory those before adding a multi-gig switch. Choose this NAS for its documented recovery options, without assuming that its Ethernet rate predicts a transfer speed.
See the DS225+ on Synology's site
Best entry option: Synology DiskStation DS223j
Choose the DS223j when the job is phone-photo uploads, shared files and backups of selected computer folders. Its model page documents Synology Photos, facial recognition, Synology Drive and Hyper Backup. It lists 1 GB DDR4 memory without an expansion option, so plan around the supplied memory. Its single Ethernet port is 1GbE.
This is not a reason to give up snapshots: Synology lists Btrfs and Snapshot Replication from DSM 7.2-64570. Confirm the installed DSM version before creating the storage volume.
Keep the j suffix on the order. The DS223j and DS225+ in the table are different enclosures with different memory and Ethernet specifications. The entry recommendation assumes you want the documented file/photo workflow, rather than the DS225+'s PC-image backup path.
See the DS223j on Synology's site
Best ADM alternative: ASUSTOR Drivestor 2 Pro Gen2 AS3302T v2
Choose the AS3302T v2 if its ADM applications fit your household: Photo Gallery 3 with AiFoto 3, Windows Backup Plan, and Snapshot Center. ASUSTOR documents automatic phone-photo uploads through AiFoto 3 and file restoration through Backup Plan. Its model specifications list Btrfs, a 2.5GbE port and 2 GB DDR4 that cannot be expanded.
The revision matters: Drivestor 2 Pro Gen2 / AS3302T v2 is the model covered here. Do not transfer this specification sheet to an unsuffixed AS3302T order. The fixed memory is also a reason to decide which apps you actually need before buying.
For NAS-to-USB protection, ADM's External Backup supports scheduled copying in either direction. Check its Keep extra files at the destination setting when designing retention. Its ordinary folder synchronization makes source and destination identical; it should not be mistaken for a history of deleted files.

Decide whether two bays leave enough room to grow
For this household kit, we recommend RAID 1, or Synology's supported two-drive SHR configuration with redundancy. UGREEN's DXP2800 documentation confirms RAID 1 support and capacity limited by the smaller disk. ASUSTOR's RAID explanation says RAID 1 writes identical data to both drives and uses the smaller drive's capacity.
Capacity example, calculated from that rule: two 8 TB drives provide 16 TB raw, but about 8 TB before filesystem and system overhead in RAID 1. Do not buy a pair expecting 16 TB of mirrored storage. Synology also cautions that usable capacity depends on the filesystem and system metadata.
Source: Calculation from ASUSTOR's RAID 1 capacity rule; usable space is lower
Before choosing disk capacity, total your current files, retained computer-backup versions and expected growth. Stop buying two bays if that total will not fit on one planned disk, or if you already expect to add another internal disk. Use the larger-enclosure choices in our home NAS guide. ASUSTOR lists RAID 1 expansion by complete drive replacement, while Synology lists expansion with larger HDDs: a full mirrored pair needs a replacement plan, not an empty-bay assumption.

Check the clients as carefully as the enclosure. Synology Photos mobile requires iOS 16.0 or later, or Android 11 or later. Synology recommends notifications and a charger for efficient iOS backup. HEIC photos and HEVC videos can also require Synology Image Assistant for additional previews; try the recipient's actual formats during setup.
Mac buyers should read the restore limitation: Active Backup's current technical table lists file/folder restoration through Recovery Portal only for Mac, despite its whole-device backup modes. The same page's Recovery Wizard section also describes bare-metal recovery for Macs, so confirm that discrepancy with Synology before buying for a Mac rebuild. Use the documented Time Machine workflow as the starting point for a Mac backup plan.
Order the disks and a separate backup destination
A complete default order is the DXP2800 diskless enclosure, a matched pair of compatible CMR NAS disks, and a separate USB backup drive sized for your selected data and retained versions. UGREEN's model page directs buyers to check the exact disk, SSD and memory models against its compatibility list. Add M.2 storage or a memory upgrade only if your planned applications need it.
For a Synology kit instead, the example order remains the DS225+ enclosure, two Synology HAT3320-8T disks, separate USB backup storage, and the memory module if object recognition matters. The HAT3320-8T is an 8 TB, 3.5-inch SATA CMR drive; Synology's compatibility results list it for both DS225+ and DS223j, with firmware 1401. Recheck the exact model and firmware before ordering.
The existing WD Red Plus 8 TB WD80EFPX is another disk to evaluate, not an enclosure or a populated NAS kit. WD's exact-model specifications confirm CMR, SATA and 3.5-inch. That does not establish compatibility with every NAS: look up the exact part against your enclosure and installed software before substituting it into the kit.
For the DXP2800, UGREEN documents incremental USB backup and restoration through Sync & Backup. Incremental mode retains copies of deleted source files; mirror mode repeats deletions. The .ubk package needs working UGOS for restoration. If the enclosure is lost, plan for another working UGREEN NAS, or maintain an additional plain-file copy on storage your recovery computer can read. Test this dependency before trusting the kit.
For a Synology NAS, Hyper Backup supports folder/package backups to external devices, another NAS or supported cloud destinations. Multiple-version backups use Synology's backup format: Hyper Backup Explorer can browse and download files on a computer. Opening a file in Explorer does not prove a whole-PC restore from an Active Backup image; rehearse those as separate recovery jobs. Plan that recovery path as well as the backup job.
RAID is not backup. ASUSTOR's backup guidance recommends three copies, two media types and one offsite copy. If the NAS becomes the only home of your photos, add independent copies accordingly. Snapshots on that NAS do not move those files to another location.
Make the kit gift-ready
Agree who will administer it before ordering. Check whether the offer is diskless or includes disks, match every suffix and capacity, and confirm the supplied power adapter, regional AC lead and network cables. Synology lists the adapter, power cord and LAN cables in both enclosures' package contents. Plan a free Ethernet port and a backup destination with room for retained versions.
- Yes: Exact enclosure model, revision and diskless/bundled contents confirmed
- Yes: Compatible pair of internal disks and separate backup storage arranged
- Yes: Recipient's phone and computer clients checked
- Yes: Administrator, update routine and recovery instructions agreed
Make a small backup and restore it before trusting the kit. For UGREEN, restore a sample from the USB .ubk package through Sync & Backup and open the recovered files. For the Synology example, use Hyper Backup's integrity check and download sample files through Explorer. For ADM, inspect the external backup's copied files and preview a snapshot; ASUSTOR says restoring a snapshot temporarily suspends services.
Create a sample
Upload a photo and back up a disposable document using the chosen client.
Copy it outside the NAS
Run the independent backup job and check its result.
Retrieve it
Download the sample from the backup destination and open it on a computer.
Record the procedure
Leave account recovery details and instructions with the administrator.
How we choose
We researched official model specifications, package compatibility lists and backup/restore documentation; we have not physically tested these enclosures. Rankings reflect the household job, required memory, disk compatibility and a documented recovery route. We do not rank transfer speed or quietness from specification sheets.
Synology's status data labels DS225+ and DS223j firmware support Full; its policy defines that as continuing firmware and software updates. ASUSTOR lists AS3302T v2 as generally available with supported software. Check the Synology and ASUSTOR status pages at checkout; treat those labels as a maintenance check, not a guaranteed support term.
Verdict
Get the UGREEN NASync DXP2800 for a UGOS household backing up selected computer folders and phone photos, with independent backup and its recovery requirements planned. Consider the DS225+ for its documented PC recovery options, the DS223j for a narrower file/photo job, or the AS3302T v2 for an ADM household. Complete the order with compatible disks, independent backup storage and a restore rehearsal. If the capacity worksheet already needs another internal disk, choose a larger enclosure before buying.
Frequently asked questions
Is a 2 bay NAS enough for home backup?
Yes, when your files, retained backup versions and expected growth fit within one planned disk's capacity in a mirrored pair. RAID 1 uses the smaller disk's capacity, before filesystem overhead. If you already expect to need another internal disk, choose a larger enclosure before buying. Keep a separate backup destination whichever enclosure you choose.
Is RAID 1 a backup?
RAID 1 mirrors data across disks and protects against a drive failure. It does not replace backup. ASUSTOR's backup guidance explicitly separates RAID protection from backup and recommends an offsite copy. Keep recoverable copies outside the NAS, and test that you can retrieve files from them before removing originals from a phone or computer.
Which Synology two-bay NAS should I choose for photos?
Choose the DS223j for photo uploads and its listed facial-recognition feature. Choose the DS225+ if you want its documented object-recognition feature, but allow for a memory upgrade: Synology specifies at least 4 GB for object recognition, while the enclosure ships with 2 GB. Its listed 4 GB expansion module brings total memory to 6 GB.
What do I need with a diskless NAS?
Plan for the enclosure, compatible internal disks, a separate backup destination and an Ethernet connection. For the mirrored setup in this guide, buy a matched pair of disks. Check the package contents before ordering extra power or network accessories. A complete gift also needs someone willing to configure accounts, manage updates and check that restores work.
