On this page · Quick picks: compare the complete termination, not just the panel
For permanent home wiring, choose an unloaded keystone patch panel: our modular pick is the trueCABLE Unshielded 24 Port, 1U, Staggered Blank Modular panel, paired with its Cat6A 90° Toolless Keystone Jacks. Choose the Panduit DP24688TGY for a loaded Cat6 installation whose cable fits its termination specification, or skip the panel when you only need finished leads between nearby devices. The difference that matters is buying compatible cable, terminations and mounting hardware together. Panel specifications, Panduit specifications.

Keystone and punch-down are not opposites. Keystone describes a removable module; that module can itself need a punch-down tool. A loaded panel supplies the ports, while an unloaded frame needs separate jacks. A feed-through panel instead accepts finished plugs at the rear. Check what you are ordering before counting tools or terminations. Cable Matters' jack options, feed-through example.
Best modular Cat6A choice: trueCABLE staggered 24-port panel and jacks
Buy the Unshielded 24 Port, 1U, Staggered Blank Modular panel with Cat6A 90° unshielded toolless jacks, family 6ATL90CMPT. The frame's staggered layout is designed to reduce alien crosstalk between terminations. Its specification calls for a 19-inch, 1U installation and a minimum 8-inch rack depth; a cable management bracket and nylon ties are included. Leave access behind the jacks when planning the rack.
The reason to choose modular is serviceability: replace the affected jack or change the port population as your wiring grows. This is our preference for a home installation likely to change. The frame specification accepts unshielded standard/HD keystones; use the specified jack family rather than assuming every wide jack fits every opening.
The jack datasheet documents 23–24 AWG solid copper, 0.86–1.20 mm insulated conductors and 4.60–9.00 mm cable jackets. It uses a hinged cap; the instructions require jacket preparation and flush cutting, with trueCLOSE pliers offered as a closure aid. Toolless does not mean no preparation tools.
For an entirely specified cable match, choose trueCABLE Cat6A Riser Unshielded cable. Its sheet gives 23 AWG solid copper, 1.02 ±0.02 mm insulation and 7.30 ±0.2 mm jacket diameter, and names 6ATL90CMPT among its compatible accessories. Those dimensions, including tolerances, sit within the jack's ranges. Select the U/UTP CMR version; shielded, plenum and outdoor cable require their own selection checks.
Best loaded Cat6 choice: Panduit DP24688TGY
The DP24688TGY supplies 24 Cat6 ports in 1U, with T568A/B identification and write-on areas. Its sheet specifies 22–26 AWG solid or stranded cable and 0.048-inch conductor insulation. Buy the named PDT110 single-wire punch-down tool and SRBM19BLY strain relief bar if you do not already have suitable termination and cable support equipment.
This is our choice for a settled Cat6 wiring plan. An unusual benefit for a loaded panel is that Panduit lists DRJ688TGBL replacement port modules: a damaged port does not automatically mean replacing the panel. These are the named Panduit replacements, not a promise that universal keystones fit.
Variants matter: DP24688TGY is the flat Cat6 panel. DPA24688TGY is angled, DP48688TGY is the 48-port/2U version, and DP246X88TGY is the separate Cat6A model. Do not lose the extra letter when ordering. For new full-distance 10G wiring, choose the Cat6A modular basket here rather than treating this Cat6 panel as equivalent. Panduit Cat6 family, Cat6A family.
There is a mounting-hardware conflict: Panduit's sheet lists M6 and #12-24 screws, while its engineering drawing lists #12-24 hardware and notes removal of M6 screws. Confirm the box contents and use hardware matching your rack.
Best without a rack: trueCABLE staggered 12-port wall panel
The Unshielded 12 Port Wall Mount Staggered Blank Modular panel uses an 89D wall bracket, supplied with screws and anchors. Its specification identifies the same unshielded standard/HD keystone form factor and a staggered Cat6A design, with no rack required. Use the same jacks and cable above for the smaller basket.
Choose it when the wall location suits your routes and outlet count. It is for indoor installation. If growth would exceed its capacity, plan the rack panel now and populate only the positions you need.
Best no-panel outcome: Cable Matters 160001 patch leads
If your job is connecting nearby finished Ethernet ports, skip the bulk spool, jacks and termination tool. Cable Matters' 160001 is an unshielded Cat6 lead with fitted RJ45 connectors and strain-relief boots.

Check package and model options
Check price on Amazon. The existing linked variant is a black, 7-foot single cable; choose another length through the maker's selector when needed. For permanent room wiring, use the baskets below. Fluke distinguishes the fixed panel-to-outlet link from replaceable equipment patch cords in its channel explanation.
Match cable dimensions and shielding before ordering
Already buying Cable Matters cable? 160017 Cat6 is 23 AWG solid copper; its FAQ describes a 1.02 mm conductor OD. 160037 Cat6A is also 23 AWG solid copper, but specifies 1.2 mm insulation. Its foil-looking internal wrap is isolation, not shielding.
The Cat6A cable reaches the upper insulation limit of the trueCABLE jack. Its fetched page does not publish overall jacket diameter, so confirm that dimension before substituting it into the basket. Cable Matters explicitly recommends its own 180014 jacks or 180028 panel for 160037; that is a separate manufacturer recommendation, not evidence that every Cat6A termination fits. Keep an existing suitable spool rather than buying another solely for the brand name.
- Yes: Conductor construction and AWG match the jack or panel instructions
- Yes: Insulated conductor diameter and overall jacket diameter fit their separate limits
- Partly: Category agrees throughout the intended channel; category alone does not establish physical fit
- No: Unshielded cable and a metal connector do not create a continuous cable shield
Use unshielded components for the unshielded baskets here. For a shielded installation, select shield-compatible connecting hardware and follow its shield-contact and bonding instructions throughout. Fluke shows that incorrect shield attachment can fail Cat6A alien-crosstalk requirements; it specifically advises following the connecting-hardware vendor's instructions. Shield termination guidance.

For Cat6A patching, use factory-finished Cable Matters 160012 Cat6A leads, selecting a 1- or 3-foot rack length only if it reaches. Their shielded plugs do not convert these U/UTP runs into shielded links. Buy by cable count: the maker page title says five-pack while its main heading omits quantity, so confirm the selected pack and length.
For the loaded Cat6 alternative, replace the rack frame and panel-side jacks with DP24688TGY, add PDT110 and SRBM19BLY, and retain compatible room terminations and Cat6 patch leads. Verify the bulk cable against Panduit's insulation specification before ordering. Use our Cat6 vs Cat6A cable guide for the cable decision and multi-gig switch guide to count active switch ports separately.

How we choose
This is a document-based selection, checked November 2, 2026, without physical installation or performance testing. We compared manufacturer specifications and instructions for conductor fit, mounting, cable support, replaceable parts and the complete purchase. The recommendation favors the documented trueCABLE cable/jack pairing; the Cable Matters substitution remains conditional on its unpublished jacket dimension.
For testing, follow Fluke's verification, qualification and certification explanation. Basic continuity verification does not certify a category. Choose a verifier with split-pair detection; request permanent-link certification when you need documented standards compliance. A product's category specification is evidence about the component, not a test result for your finished wiring. Testing distinctions, component versus channel.
Verdict
Choose the trueCABLE staggered modular system for the Cat6A basket, using the wall or rack format that fits your installation. Choose Panduit DP24688TGY for a loaded Cat6 plan after checking the cable specification. For nearby equipment with finished Ethernet ports, buy the right-length patch leads and skip the panel.
Frequently asked questions
Is a keystone patch panel better than a punch-down panel?
Choose keystone for independently replaceable jacks and expansion one port at a time. Choose a loaded punch-down panel when its category and cable dimensions fit a settled wiring plan. Keystone describes how a jack mounts; it does not tell you how the wires terminate. The trueCABLE jacks here use a closing cap, while the Panduit panel uses a single-wire 110 punch-down tool.
Can I use Cat6A cable with a Cat6 patch panel?
Check the conductor construction, gauge and insulated diameter against the panel instructions before buying. A cable's Cat6A label does not establish physical fit, and using a Cat6 panel does not establish a Cat6A channel. Panduit lists 22–26 AWG solid or stranded cable and a 0.048-inch insulation specification for the Cat6 panel here. For a new installation intended for full-distance 10GBASE-T, choose Cat6A components throughout and verify the installed link.
Do I need a patch panel if I have a switch?
A panel organizes the fixed cabling; the switch connects the equipment. In a typical room run, a short patch cord connects a switch port to the panel, and the permanent cable runs to the room outlet. For a few nearby devices connected with finished patch leads, our recommendation is to connect them directly and skip the panel. Buy a panel when you need an organized termination point for permanent runs.
Does a cable tester certify my new patch panel wiring?
That depends on the instrument. Fluke distinguishes verification, which checks basic connectivity, from qualification for an application and certification against cabling standards. Use a verifier that detects split pairs when checking your terminations. A continuity pass alone does not establish Cat6A performance; if you need documented category compliance, arrange certification of the installed permanent links and retain the results.
