For an existing, measured home rack, the Synology RS422+ is our compact 1U pick for file storage and backups. Choose the RS1226+ when you need eight bays and built-in 2.5GbE; choose a DS425+ on a rated shelf when you can spare the height. The deciding purchase is the enclosure plus its supported mounting method and drives, so check those together.

Best compact 1U pick: Synology RackStation RS422+

Choose the standard RS422+ enclosure for a storage-focused installation where rack height matters. Its AMD Ryzen R1600 and 2 GB DDR4 ECC accompany four SATA bays. Synology documents direct mounting in a two-post rack, which is particularly useful when a shallow installation cannot accommodate its supported four-post rails.

The networking trade-off is clear: the supplied ports are 1GbE. An E10G22-T1-Mini module adds 10GbE; it is an optional accessory. Before adding it, check the switch and computer connections in our multi-gig switch guide.

Order the standard enclosure, your chosen compatible drive set and the mounting hardware your measured rack requires. A seller's populated bundle is a different basket: record its actual disks and whether it includes the optional module or rails.

Best for eight bays: Synology RackStation RS1226+

The RS1226+ earns its extra height when you need eight SATA bays, two 2.5GbE ports or more memory. It has an AMD Ryzen V1500B, 4 GB ECC memory expandable to 32 GB, and two M.2 slots documented for NVMe caching. Do not count cache slots as additional full-size disk bays.

Order RS1226+, not RS1226RP+, for this fit example. The shared product table gives the single-power-supply RS1226+ a depth of 306.6 mm; the redundant-power RS1226RP+ is 398.4 mm deep. They also list different mounting support: the RS1226+ supports direct two-post mounting and RKM114; the RP+ lists four-post mounting with RKS-02.

The limitation is the complete installation: allow 2U, a compatible drive set and its cooling needs. Do not choose eight bays solely because the enclosure is shallow.

Best tower alternative: Synology DS425+ with Eaton SRSHELF2P1U

The DS425+ provides four SATA bays, an Intel Celeron J4125 and 2 GB memory, expandable to 6 GB. Its 2.5GbE port avoids the RS422+'s optional network-module decision. Our home NAS guide covers the wider tower shortlist.

Keep this tower upright. The Eaton SRSHELF2P1U is a documented candidate: a 1U cantilever shelf, 305 mm nominal depth, rated for 18.1 kg, compatible with two- or four-post racks, with mounting hardware included. It provides a deeper platform than this tower's 223 mm chassis depth. This is a dimensional pairing, not a Synology-certified rack kit.

Measure the shelf's usable platform and the tower's feet before ordering; leave the tower's 166 mm height above the shelf deck, ventilation space and access to trays. Add disks to the DS425+'s 2.18 kg enclosure weight when checking the shelf and rack load limits. This arrangement consumes more vertical space than a 1U appliance.

RKM114 requires mounting-post width of at least 450 mm, panel width of at least 480 mm, and 570–720 mm mounting depth for these two RackStations. Its separate 570–810 mm group applies to other models. Do not transfer that longer range to these picks.

Check the mounting assembly before checkout
  1. Identify the rack

Record its width, posts, mounting holes and usable height.

  2. Measure both depths

Write down post spacing separately from the closed-door equipment envelope.

  3. Match the mounting kit

Check the exact NAS, rail adjustment range, fasteners and rail projections.

  4. Check access with cables

Allow connectors, cable bends, airflow and drive removal before signing off the order.

For example, post spacing equal to the RS422+'s 327.5 mm body depth fails RKM114's minimum. 570 mm post spacing meets that minimum, but still needs the width, holes, load and clearance checks above. These are illustrative fit decisions, not claims about a particular cabinet. Use direct mounting only for the documented two-post arrangement; do not assume front ears alone support a four-post installation.

Noise, cooling and power: choose the room first

Sources: the model specification tables linked above. These are manufacturer figures, not a like-for-like noise ranking. In particular, the RS1226+'s SSD result cannot predict an eight-HDD installation during backups or rebuilds. Prefer a ventilated utility location over a bedroom or recording room; do not treat an enclosed cabinet as a noise solution without checking airflow.

For power planning, distinguish published access consumption from PSU capacity: the RS422+ lists 100 W, the RS1226+ 250 W, and the DS425+ a 90 W adapter. Record the NAS, switch and other protected loads together, check plugs and UPS compatibility, and follow our UPS guide for routers and NAS. Do not infer battery runtime from these NAS figures alone.

Choose the disks and backup as part of the order

A concrete RackStation drive candidate is Synology HAT3320-8T, 8 TB. Both the RS422+ drive list and RS1226+ drive list list it with firmware 1401. Their compatibility notes require DSM 7.2.2-72806 or newer before installing this drive. The current Plus drive page identifies CMR recording. Match the exact part and read the compatibility notes again before buying; another 8 TB model is a separate check.

For the RS422+, an illustrative order is four matching 8 TB drives in RAID 5. Synology's RAID rule gives (4 − 1) × 8 = 24 TB before system/filesystem overhead and your chosen free-space reserve. This is our arithmetic, not a usable-capacity promise. Use the RAID calculator for your actual drive sizes and layout; do not buy an eight-drive set merely to fill the RS1226+.

The existing WD Red Plus WD80EFPX record is another route for the tower basket: WD specifies 8 TB and CMR. Synology's DSM 7.3 announcement permits non-validated third-party HDD installation and storage-pool creation on covered 2025 DiskStations, including DS425+. That permission is not certification of every drive/firmware pairing and does not establish the policy for either RackStation. Check the installed software and drive list; M.2 pool and cache creation still requires listed drives.

Follow Synology's backup guidance: keep three copies, on two media, with one off-site. Budget independent backup storage and retained versions outside the NAS array, then restore a sample before relying on it. Our NAS drive guide covers the complete disk-set decision.

How we choose

This is manufacturer-document research; no physical or acoustic comparison was performed. We prioritize a documented chassis, supported mounting route, current support status and exact drive compatibility over advertised performance. Synology's support table currently marks all three NAS picks generally available with Full DSM update status. Recheck that status before ordering; it is not a dated lifetime commitment.

Why the QNAP TS-464eU remains conditional: QNAP's US store identifies TS-464eU-8G-US; its support data lists the 4G version as end of sale while the family retains Full OS maintenance and Active security support. However, its product page still recommends RAIL-S01, marks that accessory EOL, and lists RAIL-S02 at 203.2–330.2 mm post depth. The rail page instead labels RAIL-S02 126–415 mm. Obtain model-specific confirmation and the complete rail envelope before choosing it for a shallow cabinet. We cannot resolve that conflict into an assured fit.

Check the complete holiday basket

For the example RS422+ installation, put the enclosure, four HAT3320-8T drives, RKM114 only where its measurements fit, network cabling and independent backup storage on the same worksheet. Add UPS protection and the optional network module only after checking the installation. For the tower route, replace the rackmount enclosure and rails with DS425+ plus the measured Eaton shelf.

  • Yes: Exact enclosure and power-supply variant match the worksheet
  • Yes: Mounting kit fits the rack, with connectors and doors included in the clearance check
  • Yes: Drive model, firmware, quantity and backup target are recorded
  • Partly: Populated bundle: accept only after checking every included disk and mounting accessory
  • No: Unspecified rails or an unexplained disk substitution: resolve before ordering

Verdict

Buy RS422+ for a compact storage-focused installation, RS1226+ for eight bays and built-in multi-gig, or DS425+ on the rated shelf when the tower arrangement suits your space. The final approval is your measurement sheet: supported mounting, cable clearance, exact disks, cooling and an independent backup all need to fit the same order.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best rackmount NAS for a home rack?

Start with the Synology RS422+ for four-bay file storage and backups in a compact 1U enclosure. Choose the RS1226+ if you need eight bays and built-in 2.5GbE, allowing for its 2U height. Both list direct mounting in a two-post 19-inch rack; their optional RKM114 fixed rails require 570–720 mm mounting depth in a four-post rack. Measure before ordering.

Will a shallow rackmount NAS fit a wall-mounted cabinet?

A nominal cabinet depth does not establish usable space or front-to-rear post spacing. The RS422+ has a published depth of 327.5 mm including handles, but its RKM114 rail arrangement requires at least 570 mm mounting depth. Record the post spacing, door clearances, rear connectors and mounting method separately. Use a documented two-post installation where applicable, or investigate an appropriately rated shelf.

Is a rackmount NAS quiet enough for a bedroom or office?

These specifications cannot establish that. Synology publishes 28.5 dB(A) for the RS422+ with HDDs at idle, while the RS1226+ figure of 23.3 dB(A) uses SSDs at idle. The DS425+ figure of 21.6 dB(A) also uses SSDs. Those conditions do not establish how your hard-drive configuration will sound during backups. Prefer a ventilated location away from sleeping or recording areas.

Can I use WD Red Plus drives in these Synology NAS models?

Check the enclosure and installed software separately. Synology's DSM 7.3 announcement permits non-validated third-party HDD installation and pool creation on covered 2025 DiskStation models such as DS425+. It does not establish the same policy for either RackStation. Our RackStation drive example is HAT3320-8T, listed with firmware 1401 for both models. Recheck the exact model, firmware and compatibility notes before ordering.
